‘Reclining Nude. (Self Portrait)’

This is a painting I never thought I’d want to create, let alone be proud to display. Like my triptych, The Three Ages of Woman, this concept lived at the back of my mind for the best part of a year, and the two pieces form a continuous narrative.

While The Three Ages of Woman explored my personal journey—childhood joys, later hardships, and the woman I became as a result—this final piece is an expression of arrival. It marks the point where I am unashamedly happy with who I am, both inside and out.

It is far more figurative than the abstract expression of The Three Ages, serving as the visual culmination of that journey. Yet it retains an abstract element, capturing an intense feeling of 'self' rather than functioning as a meticulous physical study. Measuring 120cm x 100cm, the piece uses rich, warm background colours to represent deep contentment.

I chose not to include any props. It was a difficult decision out of concern the canvas might feel empty, but I refused to allow any distractions from the impact of the figure, her boldness, and her confidence. I used to think nudes were painted purely for shock value. I was wrong—at least in this case. This is an expression of being at peace, knowing your worth, and allowing yourself to be loving, joyful, and entirely visible.

I hope you enjoy this piece and can see its connection to my previous work. I have never painted anything so personal and bold, but that’s the point: I have never had this degree of self-acceptance. This is me.
